Canadian dental care plan (cdcp)

What is it?

How to Apply?

How to Apply?

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal government initiative designed to provide dental coverage for Canadian residents without dental benefits and with a household income below $90,000 per year. It's important to note that this is a government dental benefit, not a free dental program.

The CDCP aims to assist Canadians who lack dental benefits, without replacing any existing benefits from work, school, or private plans.

Administered by Sun Life and overseen by Health Canada, the CDCP does not involve dentists in determining eligibility or covered services.

How to Apply?

Applying for CDCP coverage is straightforward, where you fill out a form online (link) . While for others, they may have already received a letter via mail to apply. If you never received any letter or don't recall getting one, you can go ahead and apply online. You will need the following to apply:

  •  Social Insurance Number
  •  Date of Birth
  •  Full name
  •  Home and mailing address
  •  List of the dental coverage you have through government social programs (if applicable)
  •  You and your spouse or common-law partner (if applicable) must have filed your tax return for 2023 and have received your Notice of Assessment

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at info@mysmilehygiene.ca if you cannot find an answer to your question.

To qualify for the CDCP, you must:

  1. Not have access to dental insurance
  2. Have an adjusted family net income of less than $90,000
  3. Be a Canadian resident for tax purposes
  4. Have filed your tax return in the previous year

Initially, the government implemented the Canada Dental Benefit, offering eligible parents of children under 12 a flat tax-free benefit of up to $650 annually. However, this program has been replaced by the Canadian Dental Care Plan, aiming to expand coverage to a wider demographic and provide more comprehensive benefits.

Services covered may include the following:

  • preventive services, including scaling (cleaning), sealants and fluoride
  • diagnostic services, including examinations and x-rays
  • restorative services, including fillings
  • endodontic services, including root canal treatments
  • prosthodontic services, including:
    • complete dentures, and
    • partial removable dentures
  • periodontal services, including deep scaling
  • oral surgery services, including extractions

Check this page for full details on services covered

The CDCP will provide reimbursement for a portion of the expenses, determined by the established CDCP fees and your adjusted family net income. Additional charges may apply directly to the oral health provider if:

  • Your adjusted family net income falls between $70,000 and $89,999
  • The cost of your oral health services exceeds the established CDCP fees, or
  • You and your oral health provider opt for services not covered by the CDCP

You might need to make a co-payment depending on your family's income. A co-payment is the part of the CDCP fees that the CDCP doesn't cover. You'll need to pay this directly to your oral health provider. Your co-payment amount is determined by your family's income.  Click here to find out more about co-payment and what they are based on adjusted family net income.

After you have applied, you can check the status of your application using the 'Status Checker' tool. To use this tool, you will need:

  • Your Application Code or Client Number
  • Last Name
  • First name
  • Date of Birth
